Computer graphics, as seen routinely in recent movies, involves increasingly sophisticated applied mathematics and applied geometry, albeit with very different goals and error norms. In this talk, I will describe the interplay between the traditionally continuous mathematics and the resolutely discrete treatment of surfaces and volumes used in graphics. Examples ranging from processing of scanned geometry to animation of fluids will be presented, and an emphasis on the importance of preserving differential geometric structures in the discrete setting will be a recurring theme throughout the talk.
